WAIHI, Saturday. Miss McMillan, who has been n most active member of the Presbyterian Church Choir, was the recipient last night of a handsome presentation on the occasion of her departure for Australia. The presentation was made by the Hcv. Mr White, on behalf of the choir and orchestra. A leap year social was held last night under the auspices of the Hibernian Society, and was attended with great success. The novelty of gentlemen having to wait until they were invited to dance caused great amusement. At the monthly meeting of the Wnihl United Friendly Societies' Hospital Conference held last night the Conference representative on the hospital trustees reported on the recent interview between the trustees and a deputation from the Thames hospital conference. The secretary was instructed to write to members of the deputation re statements that had been made by thoni at the meetings, and on receipt of their reply, to call a special meeting, so that a deputation could be appointed to attend the next meeting of the hospital trustees. WAIHI, Monday. The funeral of Charles Lewis and John Chester, victims of the fatal accident in the Talisman mine, took place this nftcruoon, and was one of the largest ever seen in the district. The funeral obsequies were conducted by the Very Rev. Dean Hackett and the Rev. .T. Gow. Mr H. A. Boyd, telephone exchange clerk, who has been transferred to Tauranga, left here by coach this morning to take up his new duties. Owing to inclement weather on Sunday a , church parade of the local Orange Lodge j was postponed for a week.

WIIANGARBI, Monday, in the Polce Court this day I'eter Anderson, a sailor employed on the scow Polly, was charged with Having been drunk and disorderly on Saturday night. A complimentary dinner and social were tendered to a company of 26 Austrians by the Port Albert Recreation Ground Committee on July 10th. as a recognition of the good work done by them iv digging and draining 10 acres of swamp land (gum land) for the purpose of a recreation ground, which, when properly finished and laid down in grass, will be one of the finest grounds in the North. FUKEKOHE. A very enjoyable social was held last Friday evening by the local band, when dancing and games were carried on until the early hours. During the evening Mr. W. Jones snug and Messrs. Cahlll, Latimer, Wilkinson, and Wright rendered an instrumental selection, both items being highly appreciated by those present. Mr. Wilkinson, on nehan* of the band, presented Mr. G. 'W. Kayes with a handsome clock (suitably engraved), iv recognition of his past assistance to the band since he became a member some twelve years ago. The music was supplied by Miss Penman, Messrs. Cahlll and Cnrd. Messrs. Wright. Jones, and Reynolds efficiently carried out their duties as M.C.'s.

It is anticipated that the printed record of the Auckland and Campbell Islands expedition, which was carried out under the auspices of the Philosophical Society, will be received about the end of tbe year (says the "Press"). The material collected by some of the members of the expedition is being submitted to scientific men outside the Dominion, aud the value of the records should be adued to considerably by the comments which they will offer. Mr. Chapman, of the I Melbourne Museum, will discuss forminifera (small shells), and Dr. Dendy, of j London, and formerly of Canterbury College, will deal with holothurians (sea j cucumbers). Members of the expedition are contributing papers, and these will be supplemented by the discussions of such well-known authorities as Major Brown (Mercer), Mr. Souter (Auckland), Mr. |Pctrie (Auckland), and others. A papet on sea birds will be written by Captain ißollons, and-the Hon. R. McNab wilj j write the historical introduction.
