A CLEAN SWEEP.
AMERICAN EMBASSY AT BERLIN. * [CBeceived a.m.y " ,'*' LONDON, June' 22. The "Daily Mail" says that President Roosevelt and the Department of Foreign •Affairs have decided to make a < clean sweep of the Embassy at Berlin on Mr. Charlemagne Tower's departure. The members of the Secretarial staff are very wealthy, and it is supposed that the President desired to get rid of the millionaire diDloinatists. ______ Mr. Charlemagne Tower has been for some years past American Ambassador at Berlin, where his lavish hospitality and his magnificent style of living have made him a great favourite with the Kaiser and his Court. Dr. Hill, who has been appointed his successor, is l a poor man with no social taates, and the Kaiser objected so strongly to the withdrawal of Mr. Tower and the appointment of Dr. Hill that he took the very, unusual course of sending a letter to Washington to remonstrate with the President against the" change. The President has evidently objected to the extravagance and ostentation of the American millionaire "regime" at Berlin, and is following up the withdrawal of Tower by altering the personnel of the whole Embassy.
