THE PROPOSED LOAN.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —I notice by the papers that the Council propose to raise a loan of £118,000, and allocate same in different ways. To my mind there are two items that commend themselves to the ratepayers for careful consideration before agreeing to it. Those I reler to are, £30,000 for "additional sum of Town Hall"; £20,000 for "various street works." It is clear to everyone to-day that our streets arc in a very bad state of repair, and I as a ratepayer contend that, instead of consenting to an expenditure of another £30,000 on the' Town Hall, we should insist before voting on the matter that the £30,000 be added to the £20,000, and have some permanent scheme laid down for both the proper formation and maintenance" of streets. At present it seems to mc that there is no such scheme, and as evidence of this I would draw attention to the yards of metal that have been laid down on the top of Shortland-street (one of the steepest in the city), and there allowed to remain for many days without being proper!} , rolled in. Really,. Sir, if seems ridiculous to think that this kind 61 so-called repairs should be allowed to go on and p&blic money spent in such a way. I feel sorry for the poor horses that have to pull daily over this metal. —I am, etc., T f TEPAYER,
