DRINKING AMONG STUDENTS AND VOLUNTEERS.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —A correspondent in the Friday issue of the "Star" waxes most indignant over the statements of Mrs. J. Williams regarding drinking among students and volunteers. As one who has studied in two university colleges of Xew Zealand, let mc assure your correspondent that among certain sets or classes, in those institutions, drinking does take place. This statement I could prove if necessary. On the whole, Neiv Zealand students are temperate. Still, the statements made by Mrs. Williams were not without foundation. As for volunteers, having worked for years in a large factory, I know something of the effects of volunteer dinners, smokeconcerts, etc., not to mention the drinking after parades. As for the statement of the Hon. R. McNab, I caji but write that his experience in this matter has evidently been very different from the experience of many other people. At camp the drinking may not be so evident; on trains and at other times it certainly is prevalent. That there arc those who will deny this is surprising.— I am, etc., X.
