PRINCE OF WALES , BIRTHDAY.

Although a very large number of the Auckland firms elected to close their establishments on Monday last (Empire Day), the observance was far from unanimous, and an equally large number of business places and offices ■will be closed on "Wednesday nest, the Prince of Wales' Birthday. All the Government offices, the Customs Department, trill observe Wednesday as a holiday. A number I of tradesmen who closed their shops on Empire Day, -will also close on Wednesday, these mcludmg the butchers and bakers. The grocers, drapers, etc.. -will remain open, although some of the general merchants and the general carriers mil observe the holiday. Although June 3 is specified as the holiday in most Arbitration Court Awards, the provision allowing the grocers to exchange the date by arrangement with the workers' union, has been utiiiaed in the case of Wednesday next. The Anckiand Post Office will observe a holiday, and mails usually dispatched on Wednesday close at 7 ajn. On Tuesday, Jtme 2. an over-counter delrrerr will be made between 7.30 and 5.30 p.m. The Auckland Telegraph Office will be open from 9 ajn. to 4 p.m. and from 7 pan. to midnight.
