DEATH UNDER CHLOROFORM.

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DTJNEDIN, Saturday. Peter Paxton, tram conductor, aged 28, died at the hospital yesterday, while under the influence of an anaesthetic preparatory to undergoing an operation. At the inqjiest Dr. Ritchie said he administered to deceased a mixture ol chloroform and ether, after examining him and finding him fit for the anaesthetic, which was necessary for the serious operation which he had to undergo. The deceased took the anaesthetic well, but suddenly became faint, dying shortly afterwards. In the doctor's opinion death was due to heart failure following septic absorption from, empyema, accelerated by the anaesthetic Drs. Eafconer and Ritchie agreed as to the cause of death, and also stated that the operation was absolutely necessary. The jury returned a verdict in accordance with the medical testimony, adding that no blame was attachable to anyone.
