A SMALL COMMENCEMENT. (Received 8.29 a.m.) NEW YORK, April. 13: . The fire at Boston has- now been extinguished. ... The outbreak commenced' in a ragpicker's shop, and spread With amazing rapidity. A total of ten thousand people have been,, rendered homeless. Four additional deaths have-been-'re-ported, bringing the death-roll up to five. The damage to property is estimated at two millions sterling. [The suburb of .Chelsea lies to the north-east of Boston, from which it is. divided, by the estuary of the Mystic River. At the last census its population •was 34,000. On several previous occasions large fires' have occurred in Boston. In November, 1872, a fire destroyed SO acres of building's, 35 lives being lost. Fourteen years later damage was. done to the extent of five million, dollars,, and in 1593 another fire- caused damage to the extent of three milliondollars,, and cost five lives. Next year another fire rendered 500 families homeless,, and. caused: damage to the extent of a million dollars, j ■
