DEVICE FOR TURNING A PIPE.

When a wrench is not at hand to hold or twist a pipe or bar, a simple substitute may be found in three or four feet of stout rope. Tie a loop at one end and a knot at the other. Beginning with the knot end, twist the rope around the pipe. A stout stick or short pipe is then placed in the loop end and turned gently until the clack is out of the rope. Then you have a hold on the pipe you wish to turn, which is only limited by the strength of the rope and the length of the lever. A chain may be used instead of the rope if more convenient.
