ANNUAL MEETING.

The annual meeting of friends interested in the Costley Training Institute

was held last night,', and, as usual, the f large hall was crowded. In the absence of the chairman (Hon. G. Fowlds, M.P.) : i Major R B. Morrow- presided. He I apologised for the absence of the chairman,, also Messrs. Wesley Spragg and C. Hudson,,the former lacing on his way to England, and .the latter absent through the illness, of ;a relative. The boys ,of the ; Institute then gave musical, clubhand dumbrbell exercises, under the direction iof the master, Mr. H. Arnold Then followed lance exercises, and vaulting the horse,-all.- of, which were performed in admirable style. Mr. McKeown provided the music, assisted by a performer on the side-drum.

Mr. C. J. Tunks (hon. treasurer) read the report and balance-sheet. The report stated that the Institution has had great success in the past, and was capable of much good work, but is greatly hampered by want of capital. The trustees had no hesitation in recommending the Costley Training institution to all charitably disposed, persons as an object worthy of their beneficence. On December 31st there were 27 boys in residence at Richmond-road. Of this number 16 were engaged in various trades in the city, and 11 attending the public school. There are also 17 under the charge of the Trust Board not resident at the Institution. Of these 11 are working at trades in Auckland, and by permission of the Board receive their own wages and pay their own expenses. Of the others, four are in the country and one at sea. Messrs. Charles Hudson and Wesley Spragg had been appointed! jto the Board of Trustees. The former ! (Mr. Hudson) accepted an invitation as an associate trustee in 1901, and for] six years had rendered much valuable assistance to the management of the Institution. The best thanks of the Trust j I Board were given to Dr. Roland Aieken ] : for his valuable services as hon. medical officer, and to Messrs. Carter and Foster, j of Karangahape-road, for their kind and j : gratuitous services to the boys as dent-, ists. The boys had again, through the j kindness of Mr. A. J. Farmer, been able to enjoy a very beneficial stay at Kawau during the Christmas holidays. Assets: By buildings i and land, Richmond-road, £4067 6/9; j loans on mortgage, £8925; Savings: Bank, boys, £147 9/1; sundry, dr., £3541 17/11; piano, £35; total, £13,529 13/9 The Profit and Loss Account if or the year showed: —To provisions, £436 7/5; clothing, £122 16/2; exp/ises, £141 19/-; repairs, £33 3/-; boys' allowances, £31 8/-; Savings Bank, boys, £46 6/10; salary and wages, £235 1/-; balance carried to the credit of Revenue Account £39 5/10; total, £1086 7/3. By interest, £411 9/8;-Boys' Earnings' Account. £400 16/5; Education Department, £239 11/-; University grant, £25 1/-; discounts, £1 11/7; interests transferred, £7 17/7; total, £1086 7/3.

Rev. W. E. Lusk seconded the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, which was carried.

Master Harold Babb then recited "The Land of Little People," Master W. Collins gave a comic song, and the Rev. Carew Thomas recited "How Horatius Held the Bridge" in fine style.

Mrs. Thomas next presented the medals to the following winners:—For work: W. Virtue 1, Henry Bosser 2; best work in manual training school: Roy Ring; gymnasium: Arthur Babb 1, W Cox 2. Harold Babb, the youngest scholar, also received a special prize. Subsequently the visitors inspected the Institute and the work of the boys, being afterwards supplied with light refreshments. -- •'
