WEIILINGTON, this day.

A deputation from the Federated Master Builders' Associations waited on the Minister for Customs to-day regarding the high price of timber,-and asked that a strong export duty be placed on kauri timber, and that the" duty oh Oregon pine should be reduced or remitted-

-The Minister i-aidhe feared nothing could; be done- in - regard to taking off the duty on foreign timbers. That -was a matter for the Parliament. The Government, however, could increase the export duty on kauri up to 5/ per 100 ft-, if required. He thought sawmillers would have taken the hint when the tariff was framed, but instead there had since been two rises in price. Mr. Millar, in conclusion promised sympathetic advocacy in the deputation's cause if the various points made were reduced to writing for the consideration of Cabinet. • ■■-.
