E. Baume, K.C., defending. Further cross-examination of the witness Hill took place upon the system adopted of checking the sale of tickets, and then \ulliamson John Clark, in charge of the company's office, gave evidence as to having received Hill's statement, and of his subsequent searching of Ehrman's drawer, which he found to be overstocked with Epsom tickets. Hill had access to accused's drawer, while witness himself had occasionally sold tickets from it. The further hearing of the case was adjourned until Tuesday next (Before Dr. J. F. Carolan and Mr. G. H. Powley- J.P.s) INEBRIATE. Timothy Coady, a second-time visitor, was fined 10/ and costs, two first offenders were awarded the usual penalty, one forfeited bail, and two others were remanded. One of these last declared very persuasively that he had never touched a drink for seven long months, but last night so deadly weary and sleepy did he feel that he decided upon two or three revivers. Apparently he over-estimated his capacity for revival, and went right over the other side again into blissful forgetfulness, for, according to testimony, he was pretty well lost alike to anticipation and regrets when discovered. ALLEGED WIFE DESERTION. Hermann Wopp was accused of wife desertion by Chief-detective Marsack. who went on to say that the subject in the dock had been captured on the point of voyaging 'to Australia under an as. sumed name, and with over £600 in specie for the expenses of the excursion, what time his wife was feeling lonely down at Feilding. A remand was made to the Feilding Court for this day next ■weak. REMANDS. The gardener, Thomas Fitzgerald, accused of incendiarism in connection with the fire at Mr. Leo Myers' residence, was brought up again this morning, Mr. Cotter appearing on his .behalf. Fitzgerald stood with twitching features and stared vacantly about the Courtroom,, and when asked as to his whereabouts, made no intelligible reply. Upon Mr. Cotter's recommendation, therefore, he was remanded a further week for medical observation. William Martin, charged with stealing a purse containing £4 15/- from the person some time last year, was, said Mr. Marsack, only arrested recently, and as the owner had not yet turned up, he asked for an eight days' remand. Bail was allowed in two sureties each of £25.
