HOKIANGA RIVER.

FLOATING DOWN LOGS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, tlm day. Cabinet has decided that the Marine Department shall make further inquiries into the floating of timber on'iiokianga River. This matter was brought under the notice of Sir Joseph Ward* during his trip to the North, while staying at Kohukohu. The timber industry has always been an important one at Hokianga, but now when there are over 50 oil.launches running on the river, there is an element of danger in allowing logs to float at will in the lower portion. At the same time anything that seriously hampered the timber industry would foe unfortunate for the "district. Probably some arrangement will be arrived at whereby logs may be floated down the tributaries, and rafted the rest of the Tvay down the river. The referring of this matter to the Marine Department for further inquiry shows that it is to be considered from the point of view of the safety of navigation*
