NEW PLYMOUTH, this day. The total of the customs receipts at this port for the year just closed was £41,093, as against £34.657 in the previous year. The revenue collected on April Ist was also a record for a single day, being £759.

GISBORNE, this day. At Port Awanui on Monday a native was sentenced to three months' imprisonment for cruelty to a horse. He set dogs on the animal, and they tore its flesh. Afterwards he allowed the horse to fall over a cliff, and subsequently tied it up in a native settlement all ight.
