AN APPEAL FOR HOSPITAL SATURDAY.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —I was reading to-day of the result of Hospital Saturday "held at Invercargill, and it showed that the collection was a record for the Dominion. The total, although incomplete so far, is £1030 10/8. Now, sir, this is freely given, and such procedure is generally adopted in England and. Australia, and seeing how, at present, our hospital is not in a flourishing condition re finance, also many patients that attend there are working men with families to provide for, it is impossible to expect them to pay the fees which the Auckland Hospital Board is bound to charge, for upkeep depends on such payments. Also, the institution is insufficiently staffed, and the nurses are overworked. So I suggest vthat the public of Auckland should have a,Hospital Saturday say twice or three times a year, and 1 believe it will prove a success. I certainly believe that such institutions should be kept in the most up-to-date way, and that our hospital could be better managed than it is at present.—l am, etc., F. S. SMXOuMAN.
