CROWN LANDS BALLOT.

17,000 ACRES THROWN" OREN. A ballot was conducted by the Commissioner of Crown Lands for the Auckland district (Mr. J. Mackenzie) this afternoon, when a large number, of sections, totalling in all close on it,ooo acres, in various parts of. the district were.competed for. The ballot was conducted on the lines of the "land for the landless" policy, and some twenty who were found to be already property holders were disqualified for participation. The number of applicants -was very large, the public room of the Lands Office being crowded to excess at the ballot. The lands were thrown open chiefly on the optional system, a consideralde area being offered under renewable 1-tase. The following were the successful applicants for the sections first balloted for under the optional system:— Section 83, Kuakaka parish, J_ x Munro (only applicant). Sections 28 and 23, blocks XT. and _I Opuawhanga, S.D., A. Finlayson (only niiplieant). Lot 40, Section 1; Waiuku West parish, W. A. Healy (four applicants). Section E 17 and S.W. _». Tokatoka parish, Mr. Beckers (only applicant). Section 10, block SHI, Opnawhanga, _._)_ 33. G. Turner lomy applicant).
