NOMINATION CONFIRMED. ACCLAMATION OF THE PSESS. ' LONDON, March 20. It is now officially announced that the Earl of Dudley will succeed Lord Northcote. It is understood that he will sail lor Australia in August. j EARLIER. ! The "Daily Chronicle" says that Lord Dudley's appointment would be an excellent one. His personal and sporting qualities, and sympathy, good sense, and good judgment would render him a popular Governor-General. j "The Times'" compliments Lord Northcote on his tact, wisdom, and dignity. j "The appointment of Lord Dudley, who has held one of the highest offices in the State, is," "The Times" goes on to say, "intended as a compliment to the Commonwealth. Lord Dudley possesses some obvious qualifications, besides personal attraction, has travelled much, and knows many parts of the Empire. He has fought in South Africa, is a great lover of sports, and the social influence of himself and his gracious wife would be appreciated in Australia." AUSTRALIA'S GAD*. FURTHER PRESS COMMENTS. (Received 8.15 a.m.) LONDON, March 20. The "Dublin Express" declares that the appointment is a reward of Lord Dudley's changed attitude on Irish affairs. The "Westminster Gazette's" only regret is that Lord Dudley will not be here to take his part in the Irish controversy. The appointment will be a≤ popular as Lord and Lady Dudley themselves when the Commonvrealth gets to know them. The "Pall Mall Gazette" says the Commonwealth will more appreciate the appointment because it is not political. ""Lord Dudley couples with keen interest in political questions a very conspicuous impatience of party. His susceptibility to local views and impressions will certainly not tend to mitigate his popularity and he should prove the right man ' in the right place."
