BREAD COUPONS.
NEW CASH SYSTEM ON TRIAL. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
WELLINGTON, this day.
In view of the facts that the Master Bakers' Association will probably come to an early decision to institute the coupon system of purchasing bread, it is interesting to Eote that the system has been in operation for about three weeks in Palmerston North, and for about a month in Gisborne. In both places it is said to be working admirably. At Palmerston the butchers have expressed their intention of adopting the same system, if, after one month's trial, it is still considered satisfactory by the bakers.
Speaking of the need for some such system, Mr. Kellow (president of the Wellington Master Backers' Association) said that the public had no conception of the manner in which the master bakers were victimised. It would open their eyes to see his books, and note how many accounts had to be closed and amounts struck off simply because it was an impossibility to collect the money. He had been working hard in Wellington for a quarteT of a century at the bread business, and one would think that a man would make a competence in that, but he had been unable to do it, and had debts constituted —one of the reasons why he hadnt. j
