TURF TALK FROM THE SOUTH.

(By Telesrapa.—Own Correspondent.) : CHBISTCHUKCH, Friday. Most of the Cup candidates are now at RJccartoa, and work is setting more interesting. The best gallop so far recorded was that on Thursday morning, in 'which . Klevation, Master Deiaval, M-ahuia, Probable and Lapland took part. A solid pace was set from the start by Probable and Lapland, but the latter was in difficulties when a mile had been covered, while Probable had had enough a little further on. A "furlong from the post Mahuta was being ridden, hut failed to keep Ihis position. .Elevation and Master Deiaval finished together, the mite and quarter taking 2.11. Klevaiipn. was carrying more than Cup weight, while Master Delaval had the outside running all the way. It was a highly satisfactory gallop on the part of this, pair, and they are sure to be particularly hard to beat in the big race. Mahuta did not finish like a stayer, while Probable and Lapland were outclassed. Maniapoto. who looks very gross, disgraced himself in a mile and a half gallop witn Armistice and Outlander. After going seven fmiongs, he compounded badly, and- on this showing can have no chance in the Cup. Armistice and Outlander finished together In 2.42, the mare, who is not usually a good track worker, showing to most advantage. Paritutu, who looks particularly fit, pleased the touts greatly, by the free way in which he left ten furlongs behind in 2.12 2-5. Buccleuch, with the assistance of Ambolse, was given his flist gallop over a mile and a half, acquitting himself really well by tthtshlrig; up his task without being ridden out, in 2.40. No horse will strip fitter than Bucclench, but I am afraid *ue last quarter will find him wanting. ' On Thursday morning a large number of two year olds were galloped on the course proper for the first time, being dispatched in divisions from the barrier. The star performance of the morning was that registered by Armlet and Sweot Angelus, who "ran down four furlongs -in- -4S 2-5. Armlet was under a good bold at the finish, and thoagn small, is evidently a most brilliant tilly. Sweet Arigelus, who has not yet raced, can also muster up a lot of pace, and gives much promise. Of Sir G. Clifford's , lot, :Fleetfoot showed to most advantage, 'but her performance did not compare with that of Armlet. ... Though still showing signs of soreness after working, Glenculloeh is galloping as freely as ever, and promises to make matters merry in the Derby. . Helen Faucet, who defeated Achilles the first time he carried silk, died In foaling. Maiy of Argyle, a fail , performer in Aus-, tralia, recently purchased by Mr. J. l< , . Buchanan, arrived frord Sydney to-day. She is to be put into work, and has joined W Pine's team. - . . . : The well-known lightweight, i>. l'rlce, .Iqn.,- who for the past.few months has been riding'for D. J. Price's stable in Melbourne, Is , on his way back to New • Zealandl tie will probably have a mount on Apa, who was. to : have been ridden by Charles Jenkins in tfce New; Zealand, cue. - . ■
