DECEASED WIFE'S SISTER.
ARCHBISHOP'S DECISION.
ADVICE, NOT INJUNCTION.
LONDON, October 25,
The Archbishop of Canterbury, in a letter to the clergy and laity of the diocese, believes that the clergy will act wisely and rightly in saying that marriages with a deceased wife's sister, when they occur under a statute making them permissible as civil contracts, ought to occur elsewhere than in the church. His advice, however, is advice only, and not a formal direction or injunction.
His Grace adds that he will not regard as disloyal or disrespectful any incumbent who, carefully-weighing the whole of the circumstances, comes to a different decision.
