SHOPKEEPERS AND HOLIDAYS.
A CARNIVAL WEEK SUGGESTED.
jßy Telegraph.—Press Association.)
WELLINGTON, this day.
At a meeting of the Wellington Shopkeeper's Association it was decided to forward a letter to the Minister-in-charge of the Statutory Holiday Bill, which favours Monday closing, and represent to him that, so far as shopkeepers are concerned, Wednesday is the better day of the week on which to recognise a public holiday. It was decided also to support a carnival week, provided shops are allowed to remain open till 1 pan. daily, or on time to be agreed upon, and provided also that Parliament reduces the number of compulsory holidays during the year. The idea is to support an annual carnival week, in preference to holding scattered holidays. The meeting resolved that it is not desirable to give Mr. Keir Hardie a public reception.
