THE RAILWAY CRISIS.
NATTONAIJSATION FAVOUKED. OPPOSED By __£, ____. LONDON, October 11. The Congress of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants, with two dissevvVients, recommended the Statr control of railways. Mr. Richard Bell, M.P. (general secretary of the society), declared that when nationalisation came thousands of railway men would suffer, because much surplus labour war".! be dispensed with upon the removal of competition. He concluded by e_ampioning private investors, and making a bold stand against some confiscation ideas current. Subsequently the Congress altered the resolution to read " State ownership" instead of " State control," and also adopted a resolution condemning the tendency among railways to penalise British trade by giving preferential rates to foreign producers and manufacturers.
