Hon W. McCardle came up from the South "by the Ngapabi this morning.

Bishop Williams, of Waiapu, came up from the South by the Waikare to-day.

Mr W. A. Boucher, Government Pomologist, was a passenger rfor "the South by the Kbtoiti yesterday.

Mr F. Hill, who has been a purser in the intercolonial service, has retired from the Union Company's employ. It is Mr Hill's intention to start in business in Auckland.

Eecent guests at the Royal Hotel are Messrs A. C. Reily (Hobart), Hatrick (Wanganui), J. Harold Evans Kaipara), G. a Bentley (Whakatane),Jf. K. Taylor (Hamilton). Messrs. F. W. Williams and G. C. Mr James Tobin, a very old resident of Southland, who had attained the age of 100 years, is dead. He was an uncle o! Messrs James and Edward Tobin, successful farmers in the Hedgehope district, and well known as participants in heavy athletic contests.

After an illness of but a few days, Mr. Eric Guy lTairbnrn, youngest son of the late Mr. John Kail-burn, Otahuhu,. died at the Auckland Hospital on Bunday last, aged 28 years. The death came as a shock to a large circle of .friends, by whom he was much, esteemed.

The funeral of the late H. E. llynott, of Devonport, yesterday afternooni was largely attended; representatives from most of the hardware and soft goods firms and. shipping companies were present. ' There were a profusion of floral wreaths. The employees of the firm (John Burns and Co.), with which the deceased was so long connected, bore the coffin to the grave. Eev. Mr. Bertram, Presbyterian minister, conducted the service. Mrs. Mynott was the recipient of telegrams and letters of sympathy from all parts of the colony.
