A SYDNEY BENEFACTOR.
Mr. D. Mitchell Dead.
(Received 10.2 a.m.)
LONDON, July 24.
The death is announced to-day of Mr. D. Mitchell, the donor of the famous Mitchell Library, which is the most complete collection of the literature of Australia and Oceania in existence and of priceless value.
[Mr. D. Mitchell decided some years ago to give a library running to 'considerably over one hundred thousand volumes to the State, but with the stipulation that it should not be presented until proper accommodation had been provided for its housing. The matter was allowed to rest until last year, the Public Library in Bent-street becoming more and more lamentably cramped, and it was then decided to occupy one of several buildings in the Domain, some of which remain to be built.]
