Y.W.C.A.

AXynjAL MEETING. ; The annual meeting of the Auckland Young Women's Christian Association took place last night, Mr J. W. Stewart being in the chair. In his opening address he congratulated the Association upon the progress made, and the generally satisiactory results of the year, but emphasised the need of more energetic endeavour in the future if young women in large numbers were to De attracted to the institution. The annual report stated that the luncheon roll had steadily increased, the average attendance now being between 110 and 115, and seating accommodation being taxed to the utmost. About 256 persons had slept within the walls daring the year. Some had found a home in the establishment, and for some the institution had been useful in finding employment. The various unions and classes in connection with the Association had ail prospered during the year, and had been in their separate ways of great assistance to a great number. The visit of the Association's organising secretary, Miss Spencer, was anticipated as one that would afford much help to the local branch. During her visit addresses would be delivered. It had been suggested that various improvements should be made to the building, but the Acting Committee had decided that the finances would not permit of the whole of those suggested being carried out simultaneously. Debenture holders were approached, and the result was that the work was begun. Three of the younger members collected £125, and with this sum the debenture holders were paid off. The contract price of improvements to the upper floor was £65, part of which had been paid off. A number of other necessary improvements had necessitated the raising of funds by various means, by this means and by the income the different unlooked for expenses having gradually been paid off. It was hoped that the day was not far distant when the "Home" "would pay all expenses, such as rates, ground rental, etc. The receipts for the year, including subscriptions (£394 S/U), were £537 14/ICM, and expenses £503 12/ si, leaving a credit balance at bank of £34 2/5. Upon the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, the hon. secretary, Mrs Palmer, was heartily congratulated for the results of her work during the yeax, and was accorded a vote of thanks for her services. An address was given by the Rev. Macauley Caldwell, in. which he urged that the social side should be vigilantly and sympathetically pushed onward. He did not believe there was no home life in Auckland, but there were too many parenis who allowed their sons aod daughters to stroll about the streets at night, -who would be much better at their °own firesides or under the shelter of such an institution as the Y.W.C.A.
