THE GOLDFIELDS.

{Continued from page eight.j^, MOUNT ZEEHAN. IMPORTANT DEVELOPMENTS. Mr. E. Cartwright, manager of the Mt. Zeehan mine, brought to town this morning some pieces of very rich ore taken from the Birthday reef. A piece of the stone which the manager roasted in the Smithy furnace snows globules of bulEon freely, which points to the development being an important one. In conversation with a '"Star" representative, Mr. Caxfcwright stated that he had stripped a portion of the Birthday Reef and broken it down. It is about 18in. wide and shows some very high-class ore in •which bullion can be freely seen by roasting. He has also broken out a small portion of the lode about 20ft in from the face of No. 2 drive, and which is running into the east walL It shows some very good copper pyrites and is about 15in. wide. He has also stripped about 20ft of the No. 4'lode and intends breaking the same down. Mr. Cartwright intends to do some trenching on the No. 5 lode next week and to cut through the Birthday reef, as he finds there are some more veins in the hang-ing-wall, between it and the No. 1 lode which have a very promising appearance. The rich vein from which the ore was taken is from 2 to C inches in width in the extreme hanging-wall side of the reef. This, it may be mentioned, is all the more important because it is the hlUward side. An assay will be made to determine the actual value of the Samples of stone brought to town by the manager.

MAY QUEEN.

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) THAMES, this day.-

What is believed to be the St. Haippo reef has been intersected in the May Queen Mine. When the lode was first cut a great flow of water occurred, and the inrush ■was so great that the Hauraki pump had to work extended hours to cope with it. All indications are favourable. Development is a most satisfactory one.

TALISMAN RETI-RXS.

KARANGAHAKE, this day. The Talisman returnr for the past month will be a good one, but the exact figures are not obtainable. The high yield is attributable to the ore crushea being above average grade.
