THE MYSTERY OF MARS.
Alleged rPoof of Canals. LONDON, July 8. Mr. Lowell, the American astronomer, states that his expedition to the Andes succeeded, in obtaining photographs of Mars, showing double canals and oases.
[The existence of canals on Mars is by no means an undisputed fact. . Several astronomers hold that these " canals" are really not straight at all, and that their rectilinear appearance? is due to the same illusion as that which renders apparently straight a series of wavy lines when seen from a certain distance. These " canals " were first described by Signor Schiaparelli, of Milan, in 1882, and were first mapped by M. Perrotin in 1887.]
