SYDNEY. June 7. The Methodist Conference to-day discussed the proposals of the London Wesleyan Methodist Society for the extension of the operations of the Methodist Missionary Society oi Australasia to India. Dr. Brown moved the adoption of the recommendation of the New South Wales conference that the mission to India be postponed for the present on the ground that large mission work still remains to be done in the islands !of the Pacific He pointed out that the current expenditure for the past three i years had exceeded the income by nearly j £ 2000. | Dr. Fitchett pointed out the smaUne.ss !of the population involved in the missions of the Pacific compared with that ;of India. The question was not only 1 were they spending the money in a good cause, but to the best effect. They were told to work at their doors. Measured by time, India was nearer than some of the Pacific Islands. j He moved an amendment providing that the Mission Board send one or more men to India to train for mission work and to prepare for an Australasian mission, it being left to the Mission Board on information collected at once to organise a permanent Australasian mission in India., or maintain a preparatory mission till next general conference. Dr. Pitchetfs amendment -was carried by a large majority.
