ARCH HILL GULLY.
SEWER MUST BE BUILT. MINISTER FOR HEALTH INTERVIEWED. The necessity for dealing with the sewage that at present flows slowly along the Arch Hill Gully, past the western springs collecting pond, to the sea, was mentioned to the Hon. George Fowlds, Minister for Health, this morning by a representative of the Auck- . land '"Star." '•'Before Dr. Purdy came to take the position of District Health Officer in this City," said the Minister, "I asked him to move in the matter of getting a ] proper sewer constructed in the Arch Hill Gully. I recognised the great urgency of such a work in the interests of public health, and 1 have felt all along that it is a standing disgrace to the whole community for that gully to be left so long in such a condition. The bill introduced two years ago to enable that gully to be drained, was only thrown aside because it had not come in lat the beginning of the session, and even then comprehensive plans were not attached to it. As it was late in the session, and there were a lot of local bills to be dealt with, the Local Bills Committee threw out this particular one. If the local bodies interested will only get together a t once, and let |mc have a bill dealing with that mati ter early in the session, I have no doubt it will be passed in a week. Naturally as Minister for Public Health I should do all I could to assist the passing of such a bilL It would be almost justifiable on my part to enforce the penal clauses of the Act, and compel the local bodies to do such a necessary work, but I very much prefer to see those interested co-operate and do, with as little delay as possible, a work of such paramount importance to the health of the community."
