ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS.

Punter. — The dividend, £3 14/, as published, was wired by the Press Association, and is also given as that amount by the "Weekly Press." the Official Calendar. Beyond this we cannot state which is correct, but your best plan would be to communicate with the secretary of the club. Somali's dividend was telegraphed as £1 10/.

On Wednesday last at Ellerslie, Tanglefoot and Fabricator were sent a round of the schooling hurdles, both jumping well.

Although Landlock was not overburdened with weight in the Brighton Hurdle Race his connections have allowed him to drop out of that event.

Tbe Gilead horse Sir Gilead was brought from Whangarei on Thursday in charge of C. Chaafe, and" is now a regular attendant on the tracks at Ellerslie.

The most notcieable defections from the A.R.C. Easter Handicap are Parltutn, Seotty, Pink 'Un, Marguerite, Zimmerman, Ballarat, Glennllni, and Intelligence.

Boxes have been engaged at K. Heaton's, Greenlane, for Mr T. H. Lowry's horses, and they are expected to arrive at the end ot next week in charge of F. Davis.

The light-weight horseman Holmes has severed his connection with K. Heaton's stable, and Is now attached to the stable of the North Shore sportsmen, the Messrs Duder.

Mr. Morse's adjustments for the Tradesmen's Handicap, Eden Handicap. Onslow Stakes, Nelson Handicap, and Tramway Handicap are due on Tuesday next, the linn inst.

Mr T. H. Lowry's Great Northern Oaks candidate Sweet Nell has not been engaged In any of the minor events at the A.R.C. Autumn Meeting, and it does not look as if she would be a starter in the evenf.

The autumn meeting of the Thames Jockey Club takes place next Saturday. The Northern S.S. Company are running an excursion in connection with the gathering particulars of which will be fonnd In our advertising columns.

The nominations received for the Traqiway Handicap, which event It was decided would be one on which the double machine would be used, are so small that probably tbe A.R.C. committee will decide to change the events.

IThe Easter Handicap candidate Te Aroha, which has been having an easy time of it since the Takapuna Meeting, has resumed work at Ellerslie" under F. Maemanemin's charge. ,'

A large number of local sportsmen left for Paeroa yesterday to assist at the Ohinemuri Jockey Club's Annual Meeting, which is proceeding this afternoon and continues on Monday nest.

Evidently the Hon. J. D. Ormond's crack filly Eona is not to be seen out at the A.R.C. autumn meeting, as she has been paid up for in the Challenge Stakes and Champagne Stak.s at the C..T.0. autumn meeting, which takes place at Easter.

The defection of Glcnullin from the Easter Handicap is due to a_! injury sustained by the son of Loehie! when racing at Wanganui. by which his hoof was badly broken. The mishap, it Is stated, was caused by the horse being bored across to the outside of the course, and to his galloping on a stone.

A number of good judges who saw Aeolus race at Wanganui pick him out as a horse that Should run forward in the Easter Handicap. Aeolus has been accepted for In .the Feildlng Cup, which Is run for at the same time as the Easter Handicap, so It is evident his owner has not yet decided where his horse will compete

The Hon. J. D. Ormond has left representatives in both Auckland and Christchurch. and it looks as if the colours of the Hawke's Bay sportsmen would be unfurled at both places. Sir Tristram is his sole representative in tho Easter Handicap, while Martyrium (which won the Trial Stakes at the recent Napier Park meeting) is engaged In the Great Northern Oaks as well as a number of the minor events.

The Mercury Bay Racing Club are out with the programme for their autumn meeting, which Is fixed for April 20th. The principal event Is the Autumn Handicap of 12sovs, distance 1. mile. Nominations for all events close with the secretary. Mr. T. McGregor, Mercury Bay, on April* 6th. The weights are due on April Oth, and acceptances close on April 13th.

The Auckland Trotting Club advertise the programme for their autumn meeting, which fixed for April 13th. 17th. and 20th. The principal events are the Stewards' Trot of 60sovs. Munukau Trot of 60sovs, and High Class Trot ot 60sovs. Nominations for all events close on Thursday, the 2Sth March, at 0 p.m.

_> number of owners were present at Ellerslie on Thursday morning after breakfast to witness their horses working, amongst them being Messrs McLean, Romston. and J. Muir. Mr McLean's colt, Celtic ran seven furlongs on the grass, assisted by Te Aroba and Turbine, shaping in a pleasing manner. Mr Roulston's horses were worked ou the outside %t t.l'c course proper, Pukekohe and the gelding by Phoebus Apollo — Miss Blair galloping five furlongs, the latter showing to most advantage, wfciile Lady Winnie finished better than Conductor at the end of a sir furlong sprint.

Amongst the published list of horses left In the N.Z.. St. Leget* appears the name of Misere. The fact that this horse's name has been allowed to remain in the list is a strong argument in favour of an aJteiiation being made. iv the present system of forfeits for classical races, If any such argument were needed. One has only to: look through the unpaid forfeit list to see large amounts against owners' names, who are liable for these sums In most cases through Ignorance. In Misere's case'we have a i horse which is disqualified through compet- ' ing at unregistered meetings, and under no circumstances would he be allowed to compete, and yet his name still appears amongst those left in one of the principal races of New Zealand. The whole thing is a farce, and the sooner some alteration is made to the present conditions ataching to classical events the better.

The question of the licensing of the ex-Sydney lightweight D. Price has for a long time been discussed by sportsmen! in particular, ,but no stand - was ever taken in the matter, and when be was engaged by the Hon. J. D. Ormond, one of the ileadlng sportsmen In (New Zealand. It was thought that everything was surely in order. Now, however, the question ha. been raised, and It. will be interesting to see what action will be taken in tbe matter.' The wonder is that the difficulty has not been met with before this, as the position was well known throughout New Zealand, In fact, one of our leading local horsemen made no secret of the fact that he would test the validity- or Price's license if he ever ran second to. him, which, however, he has never done.

The Anckland Racing Club are taking further steps to prevent the bookmakers from getting communication with the Ellerslie Racecourse, and are erecting a stone wall In front- of the allotments recently purchased by Mr A. Phillip,, where the pencillers have been in the habit of

standing. It is understood that a screen will.also be placed on the top of this wal which will have the effect of entirely shutting out the view from the. bookmakervantage ground. The club -have also let a contract for. a new galvanised Iron fence to run along the back of the course, and which will fence in the new five-furlong starting-post, which is to be taken back Into the property recently acquired.

As announced In these columns last week, the double totalisator will be In nse at the forthcoming autumn meeting of the Auckland Racing Club, and the order of the running of the events has been a'tered to allow of the machine to be used. On the opening day the events chosen are the Tramway Handicap and Easter Handicap, on the second day the Hula Handicap and St. George's Handicap, and ou the concluding day the Criterion Handicap and Autumn Handicap. No separate building has been erected for the machine, and It Is to be Installed In the centre of the. present totalisator house.

A conference of delegates from the racing clubs in and around Palmerston North ■was held recently, when representatives from the Ashurst, Feildlng, Foxton, Manawatn. Marton, Rangitikei, and WaverleyWaitotara Clubs were present. A number of resolutions were brought . forward and carried, the principal being that the New Zealand Racing Conference be requested not to allow the Manawatu Club a third day for the Christmas meeting. It was also decided to appoint Mr J. G. Wilson to interview the Commissioner of Police and ask bis assistance in the suppression of bookmakers. A recommendation was passed that stewards be prohibited from betting on their own courses. A request Is to be made asking th» Net. Zealand Racing Conference to abolish metropolitan clubs and to appoint In their stead metropolitan committees, to be representative of the various clubs interested in the racing district.

The "Feildlng Star" says:—Some extraordinary methods of preventing the abolition of the totalisator have been suggested, but the strangest of all came from a representative of the Palmerston Club at the Racing Conference held at Feildlng last week. He suggested that, if the small meetings where there was no totalisator- used were not abolished, the machine was doomed,' as the multiplicity of race meetings was tending to that result. No one but the speaker could realise the logic of the argument, especially as the club of which he was tbe spokesman had Increased the number of days on which it could use tbe totalisator. That the racing clubs are fast bringing the day when the totalisator will be abolished by their covetousness for the revenue derived from it there can be no doubt, but the Palmerston Club has no right to claim any virtue of abstinence from that vrrasning policy, and It Is a puerile argument to put the blame of the objection to the totalisator on' those clubs that are not allowed to use it.
