CONTROL OF AXEMAN'S SPORTS.

TAIHAPE, this day.

At a meeting held last night of dubs affiliated with the Axemen's Association and Athletic Union, the following resolution was carried unanimously: '"This meeting of delegates representing clubs in the Rangitikei district affiliated to the -Jew Zealand Axemen's Association, and holding running events under the rules of the New Zealand Athletic Union, has every confidence in the management of the New Zealand Axemen's Association as at present constituted. This meeting considers the New Zealand Athletic Union did not act in the best interest of the clubs holding the woodcutting contests in passing a resolution suggesting that the Union should assume control of the axemen's sports in New Zealand. Further, this meeting requests the executive of the New Zealand Athletic Union not to take further action in the matter until the question is further considered at the next annual conference of delegates to the union."

EDITORS AND ARBITRATION COURTS.

REEFTON, this day. The editor of the local "Herald" was fined £1 to-day on a charge of having published matter calculated to interfere with the dispute before the Arbitration Court. The Judge said the case was the first under the Act, and as the defendant had pleaded guilty, stating that he published the matter under the idea that the case had concluded, he would inflict only a nominal penalty.

A BEAUTY SHOW THAT FAILED.

CEO-ISTGH-O-tCH, this day. The projected beauty show at Wonderland Exhibition has been abandoned. Mr. H. G. Ell, M.H.R., telegraphed" to the Hon. G. Fowlds expressing astonishment at the authorities sanctioning such a vulgar and demoralising exhibition as a beauty show, asking, "is every wholesome sentiment which the people of the colony hold dear to be sacrificed to the craze for money-getting?" Mr. Fowlds replied that the proposed beauty show was promoted by the proprietors of Wonderland, and he was not aware that the Exhibition authorities sanctioned it in any way; but would make inquiries.
