POLICE COURT.

YESTERDAY. ADTLLIATION CASE. The hearing of the case against Thomas J. Burke, charged with being the putative father of the unborn illegitimate child of Margaret Murphy, and with failing to provide for its future maintenance, was continued yesterday. Mr. Brookfield appeared for the complqinant, and Mr. J. R. Lundon for the defendant. Evidence was given by Mary Hughes Jackson, Baldwin, Gertrude Draper and Wililam Murphy, to the effect that the defendant had been seen on several occasions with the complainant. The Drunkards.—A man named Edward Lignskey -was convicted and prohibited for twelve months. William Henry Whiteside, a prohibited man, was fined £1 and costs, or seven days' imprisonment for drunkenness, and "a similar penalty was imposed for breaking the terms of bis prohibition, the terms to be cumulative. Two first offenders were, each fined 5s and costs. Peter Green, a second offender was fined £1, or seven days' imprisonment.

Vagrant Women.—Mary Little, was charged with being a rogue and a vagabond, and with soliciting prostitution in St. Pauls-street. Several police officers gave evidence, stating that the accused had been previously convicted of vagrancy, and had no means of living outside the proceeds of immorality. His Worship said the woman had a very bad record, and the only way to rescue her was to put her somewhere where she would be away from temptation. Sentence of eighteen months' imprisonment was passed. Alice Matthews, who had been arrested with the previous defendant, denied the charges of immoral conduct and vagrancy, and said she earned her living by washing and cleaning. His Worship convicted and remanded the woman for a week for medical treatment.

Obscene Language.—Foryole Omholdt was charged with obscene language in Ponsonby-road. It was stated that the offence took place in the early morning, when few people were about. His Worship inflicted a fine of £5, or one month's imprisonment.

Maintenance.—William Powell was sentenced to three mon,ths' imprisonment, in default of finding a surety of £100 to provide against his leaving Auckland without making provision for the support of Ids wife. The warrant was ordered to be suspended for a week to allow an opportunity for- compliance with the order.
