Tiwrnts McNamara and William Horrrsby, arrested at Christchurch, were brought before the Police Conrt this morning, charged with theft of rabbit dans. Chief Detective Herbert said the skins bad been found In the house of a second-hand dealer in South Dunedin. fhis person, who was to have been the principal witness for the prosecution, had last evening committed suicide by hanging. After evidence had been given, the further hearing of the charge waa adjourned till to-morrow. The witness referred to was Henry Otto Brandt, an elderly widower. At the inquest the evidence showed he had worried i-ery'much over bemg called as a witness in a Court case. yChe detectives said nothing had been said to deceased as to his being prosecuted in connection with the case, but it was admitted that deceased might have that impression. A verdict was returned of suicide while temporarily insane. N.Z. DAIRY UNION. WOODV_I_LE, Friday. The aim rati meeting of shareholders md suppliers of the New Zealand Dairy Union was held at Woodville to-day. Over 100 attended. Considerable discussion took place -as to the action of the directors in paying _d per lb bonus to suppliers, and paying no dividend on shares. The chairman explained that the first essential of the union was an increased milk supply. If the milk supply fell off shares would be practically valueless. The directors considered it better this year to pay all profit to the suppliers with a view to encourage a greater supply. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. Messrs. Parsons and Nash were elected directors, and Mr. Wilberfoss auditor. JHSCELLANEOUS ITEMS. WELLINGTON, Friday. At the Magistrate's Court to-day Francis Stephen Hart, a labourer, was committed for trial on a. charge of grievously assaulting Arthur Ware, a labourer. The plaintiff had half his nose bitten off. DUNEDIN, Friday. A cablegram received from Canton, China, states that Dr. Joseph Ings died theru suddenly yesterday from dysentery. Dr. Ings was married only a year ago, and went to Canton last December as medical missionary to the Canton Village Mission of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand. CHPJSTCHURCH, Friday. The Broadfields Shearing Shed Company was fined by Mr Day, S.M., to-day £1 and costs for failing to tile annual returns concerning its business. Eighty-two Romney Marsh ewes and a ram were shipped for Sydney by the Waikare to-day. Two consignments of merinos were landed from Australia, ex Waikere and Monowai, 52 ewes and 5 rams in all. At a largely attended confercuee of delegates of various local organisations, held to-night, a motion was- adopted urging the Government to consider the question of .the differentia! rate imposed upon the Lyttelton-Christchttrch line, as compared with other port lines in the colony, and the Canterbury members were requested to urge the Government to give a favourable reply to the request.
