DEATH OF MRS. HAMLYN.
'I . Mrs. I.'hnda Betty Hanilyu. n very old colonist, who fias tor the last twenty years resided at E*.oru, died last night. Mrs. Hatnlyn was a native of Somersetshire, and came to this colony in the "forties" with her r/usbtyid, Mr. Job Hamlyn, brother of one of the early missionaries, the Rev. .lames IJs.i_l.vn. Mr. Job Hamlyn, being n farmer, at once went on the land, for the first seven years working a farm held under lease from Bishop Selwyn. He then remove-! with his wife and family to a farm at Papakura. During- the Maori War Mr. Hamlyu was killed by the Maoris while on an errand of mercy. The settlers had come in. but oe one woman had a yonng baby, Mr. Hamlyn started back with his cart In order to letch hor some bedding and clothing. He was killed on the road between Papakura and Wairoa. The widow bought a farm at. Panmure, but. had the ill luck to have her house burned down. About twenty years ago Mrs. Hamlyn purchased a property at TSanfnrly-road. and she lias resided there ever since. She was most highly respected by all who knew her. Bight up to almost the last she was healthy, and although !»S years of age, retained her mental faculties unimpaired. Death resulted from a severe attack of bronchitis. Mrs. Hamlyn leaves one son. Mr. James Hamlyn. and two daughters, Mrs. John. Middleton Hamlyn. now in Western Australia, and Mrs. Little, mow in England, wife of Commander Little.
