SCHOOL BOOKS.
(To the Editor.} Sir, —The perusal of your leading article in to-night's issue re the expenses of education suggests a lack of definite knowledge, on .Mr Petrie's part, of the actual facts concerning the system now in operation in England. As one who left England last October, and having three children who attended the Leeds Council schools, allow mc to state that there are absolutely no fees whatever charged, either as school fees or for books, or any other school material whatever, the entire cost being borne by the municipal rates, with grants from the Imperial exchequer. The fact that books were charged for in a colony with the reputation of being foremost in progressive ideas .and methods came as a great surprise to yours, etc., NEW CHUM. April 5.
