THE FOLDFIELDS.

MINE* MANAGERS' REPORTS.

New Eclipse.r-The drive- oh the cross lode from No. 2" crosscut has been extended to the-junction of the Vulcan lode formation, which is composed :bf pug, with, a vein of quartz, 21n wide- on the footwall, and has a ! favourable appearance.'•-,' The cross lode showed strong colours of v gold along the drive,to.the junction, where It was out: off by the pug formation. A rise-was started on'the Eclipse lode, where the main lode shows feet of solid: quarts. The' portion carrying the values Is Ift on. the hangingwaU. This Appears to be opening out at the top -:of the rise; Assays from the reef in the rise were as fellows:—No. 1, £12.19/10 per ton; No. 2, £1 18/2; and No. 3, £2 3/8. Thames.—No.- 1 reef has been stripped, but ~so far no quartz has-, been broken Sown.. .The reef looks promising, and the country is . favourable, .";, Golden Belt—The reef In the" slopes at No.' 2 level shows' very nice gold.: : ■■ Ait No. 3 level, the footwall portion of the lode is to hand, with a well-denned wall. Auckland.—The No. 1 and 2, blocks over, the back of No. 2 level on Studholme's* reef are" now - worked out, and a contract has been let for sloping out. a block over No. 3 level, north of No. 1. rise. The reef in No. 3 and. No. 4 blocks over No. 2 level, and in the stopes on Pblton's reef, still maintains its size.' and Is producing good payable ore. In No. 3 level the reef is divided by a horse of mullock. Identical with the junction of the Studholme and Polton reefs. The hangingwair Is ISm wide, and the footwall and of low grade quality.' In No. 4 level; the reef Is well defined, 20in thick, but of poor quality. The winze below No. 3 level ia down 30ft on payable ore. At No. 3 level north, Polton's reef is 4ft wide, but of poor quality. During the week TO tons of ore produced "70'oz s'dwt of" hot watersqueesed amalgam,-and the two vats and agitator filled, are valued at' £2, 11/8, £2 12/8, and £1 17/ respectively. New Moanataiari. — The winze ;on the Cambrian reef below No. 3 level Is now down 66 feet, and is Within a few feet ol the same depth as the winze sunk on the rich "mineral quartz to the eastward of the present winze. Should the dip be westward we should be getting close to It now. The contractors for the extension of. the south crosscut are making slow progress, having driven-only 16 feet since starting. The country, still continues of a most favourable description, with nice mineral seams running through It, and to-day there were a few small threads of quartz veins showing. _^, New Saxon.—ln No. 2 etope the lode continues to look'well, and during the past week produced about 201b of picked stone, while the general dirt is of hetter quality than any hitherto obtained. The No. 3 stppe is well advanced, and.No. 5 has just been, started.' Th both the lode looks .promising. The No. 2 block is eastward of any previous workings above No. 4 level, and is therefore Intact to the surface. It will alßo probably be clear of the disturbed channel of country which has such adverse Influence, on the No. 1 block. The eastern end of the Intermediate level has been driven .to the break, a distance of 10 .feet, and as the break .Inclines eastward" each stone will lengthen. About 20 feet have been driven and : In both faces the quartz looks favourable, though no gold has yet been seen. At the battery grinding the accumulated tailings is now In progress, and cleaning up and retorting will take place on Tuesday morning. ."■'■-•>' New Dart.—Very good- progress is still being made., with the tunnel to intersect the shaft, a distance of, 34 feet having been driven for the week, and for the month 132 feet Thecountry penetrated is still of a loose formation, and has to be close timbered right up to the face. T. Old Albnrnia.-eDuring the week a dark, flinty-looking leader was met with, about six inches in thickness, coming In from the > left-hand 3lde and running partly >with the course of the tunnel at a long angle. This is carrying a little mineral, but no gold has I been seen -In it so far. ' Waihi Discovery.—The engineer reports that eight feet „have been driven for the | week lb hard country. A very heavily mine-' rallsed vein. crossed rthe drive! at 80 feet i which Js probably a dropper fromrhe reef. , New May Queen.—Atotal length of about' 318 feet has now been driven on the lode j at No. 6 level. For this distance the lode has yielded, and Is still yielding, good pay-?' able at nearly every breaking-dowh a. little picked stone. Is selected from the quartz. - The body of quaiti': met Vp>-the' eastern drive is underlying much-flatter,! which accounts for Its being so' tar out ot Its position. The lode .-la ;v at ' present - being stripped.' , The T crosscut to cut the hangingwaU leader Is in about. 21 feet, and so far the leader has not been met with. This leader is from three Inches to four Inches -thick In the stopes, and carries good picked stone. At present there are five stopes';in progress east and west from the winze, andctbe qnartz coming to hand continues to be of : a good quality. A start has again been made to extend the drive on the footwall branch leader going westward. There Is'hothlng fresh to report from the stope3 above No. 3 level.

Waiotahi low level is in country of a very favourable description. The reef where the rise Is to,-be started In the level Is nine Inches thick, and the quarts, broken from the roof .of- level has a most promising appearance, colours, of gold being Visible through the zinc blende and copper pyrites. '-...-. ■":.'.'•','■''.

Kurannl.—During the week a rise was started at the Teutonic level oh the .formation passed through last week. There Is a; little quartz mixed with the country In the hangingwaU of the. and the:: country appears to. be-coming in a little softer-in i the back. At-the intermediate level the I reef has opened out so big and strong that we think it advisable to drive along: on the footwall for c few feet" before' breaking down. In the top 7 intermediate, level the reef Is how getting a little more defined, the footwall portion being about 10 inches; thick and the hangingwaU .leader about' three Inches. They appear to be coming together again. Colours and. dabs of god have been seen in the stone pretty free'y.;: | ■ New Occidental.—The new crosscut "Js now in 79 feet from the main level, and'this leaves 71 feet to be driven yet before we expect to intercept Dives' reef. The conn-' try penetrated has been of a firmer, nature.

- Southern Queen. —The No. 1 level on the Blue reef has been extended nine feet. The reef; which has been broken, down for that distance, one foot in width and" Is carrying splendid minerals, coarse gold being evenly distributed. . Several pounds,; of good picked stone have been selected. ,'.' ' '• ■

J?ew Monowal.—ln the face at the low level the quartz is still showing strong, and some of it. looks fairly well. -;?*'■'?.- ■'.'.'. :■'.

Waiotahl.—The manager telegraphed yesterday afternoon 3cwt Of. picked stone from the No. 2 stope above "No."- 5: level."" The manager also reported by maU: -^No.'6 level: In the face going cast-on the main reef v the men have been,, engaged breaking out the'quartz formation,."going off more in the footwall, so that the necessary timbers can be placed in position to permit of a separate drive being commenced at any time on this formation. In the footwall portion there Is about two' feet of quartz, but so far we have Been ho gold. Driving west on ; the main reef is also In progress; The reef here is aboufc.Xour.,feet In width, bnt beyond seeing a "few small colours of gold in the hangingwaU portion, nothing further, of importance has yet-been met with. There is, however, some 700 feet more to drive, west from the face before the western boundary is reached. '■ On the Cure reef going west at this level, a leading stope is still In hand.' No. 5 level: Driving «? st main reef is still In progress. Ahe footwall here is coming round more to the right.- and unless the hangingwall goes correspondingly it will have a tendency to reduce the width of the reef In this face. There Is, however, a similar formation at No. 6 level, going more into, the footwall, and in shooting this out to place in the necessary ■- timbers, ■ good colours " of gold were seen. : This will-: also require to be driven on separately, and the timbers have been placed In; position, with-" that end In view." A second stope from the rise, going east-towards'the No.'l winze,' has also been started, and, as wired, picked stone has been" selected. - The first stope has also been In f and has now been carried 50 feeteast of the No. 1 Winze. Stopirig "above No.-4 :level" east of the end of ground'bas also.been in progress; .The first stope has now'been carried east to within a tew feet ot - the "eastern face, and a third stope has also been"started from the end of ground. A'-rlse-has'n'ow been commenced from the .back of the second -stope to.connect with. I the winze, which was started, No. 8, level. At the present time, there ore,, however, some small veins of quartz here 'which are carrying nice colonrs' of. goldV In the j Mary Ann rise has how holed | through to the bottom of tho: shaft, .bnt: there Is a 'good deal of trimming down to] do befors ths jihsft jrtU 1»* ts j tb&Jtai A JfWsV ■ :..i;.....J>-i-j„.i._::,_.-J^.. 1 ... j

Victoria.—A distance of 12ft has: beei* driven since first interesectihg the reef at No. 4-level. -The -hangingwall. portion ha« [now been -cut through;..and :the quart*-. I shows a: little bright mineral and silica, 'but on thO':whole could not-be. classed as heavily .-mineralised. This crosscut is being ! continued-to - intersect' other .known ore bodies in the vicinity. Good country is being; penetrated, 'light -sandstone, -in whicH . are : small 'stringers ; 'and mineral veins. I Rising on the^Victoria reef at No.: 4 level Is still ' in: progress, In country* of excellent description, for; gold,.*in which are numerous quartz and mineral reins. The reef is how about 12in in width, and -contains .-some splendid mineral, especially ■lv i the and , during the w.eek some nice-colours of gold" were seen when. breaking; down the quartz. The winze at the. Intermediate level -is .down loft, and. the leader'showed- nicecolours and dabs "ot ' gold when'broken this Week. .'-"-„■'-'" Rising Snn.—The mine manager report* as follows:— : In the northern drive the; reef Is somewhat 'split up, having ribs of country through it The - quartz l wheen -pounded gave a fair prospect of gold. The footwall leader, is six inches wide, and also gives, a fair of gold in the dish. As thla ,S e Z te c6mia 3 :la at a long angle the driva - Will have to be. carried along some distance before it junctions with the main reek Driving on the main reef (south end) haa been continued; the reef is 20 inches wide, and is encased -In a good channel of sand* stone country for gold. ■■-■
