ONEHUNGA BOROUGH FINANCE.
In our report of the Onehuhga Borough Council meeting, published yesterday, some inaccuracies occurred. „ The town clerk's salary was raised from £150 to £200 (not £300 as reported). The Council have reduced the rating something like -40 per cent, for the ensuing year, the general rate having, been reduced from ,1/3 to 1/, and the water rate reduced 25 per cent. As to the statement that increased rating was agreed to, the Mayor merely stated in his address that if certain necessary and permanent improvements were undertaken, a special rate of sixpence in the pound might; have to be imposed upon a poll of the ratepayers being taken. Tho position of municipal matters when the Council took office was as follows: The bank overdraft at March 31, 1905, was £1293, and at April 30, 1905, was £16G8, with contingent liabilities amounting to £525, and to meet these' liabilities there appeared only an unknown amount of arrears of rates, rents, etc., which, on completion of the audit, bore a face value of £947 with which to meet an indebtedness of £2126 7/. The rates struck gave a gross increase of revenue from all sources of some ! £650, the only additional taxation being 2d rate for charitable aid, and with .the assistance of this sum, together with j that actually recovered from arrears of rates, the Council by the exercise of (economy and avoidance of unnecessary' new works were enable to- show a credit j balance on 31st ult. of some £300. On !the 9th hit. there was a credit balance of £348 13/.
