NEWMARKET AND GREATER AUCKLAND.

PROGRESSIVE PROPOSITION. Tie matter of advancing the Greater iiuekland movement, so far as it afifected Newmarket, was raised at the Council meeting of that borough by Cr. Danes last night. The councillor in Bastion opened the matter by asking & Mayor if he prepared any report a. the subject to lay before the Council, and upon receiving an answer in the negative, suggested that with a view of holding a poll at an early date on the Greater Auckland question the finance Committee should be requested to prepare a report to place before the Ratepayers. He understood that the Eouneil was favourable to the idea- of unalsaination. and if such were the ease "the sooner they took some defiEite action towards its consummation the better. The Mayor said he thought the councillor could not be altogether correctly informed on this question of the Council's attitude in the matter. The Council carried a resolution in' sympathy srfth the scheme, certainly, but it was txpressly stated that the idea of putting it before the ratepayers could not ie entertained unless local representation, together with reasonable control over their own finances, were embodied in the scheme. He (the Mayor of Xewniarket) thought, however, that this was a matter that should be diseased only by the full Council, and le would therefore bring up a report en the Eiattpr to lay before the next Council meeting. Cr. Secconibe: In any case this question should not be discussed unless the •all Council is present. It is a big and Krious matter for Newmarket; the aigrest matter it will probably ever fore to deal with. If this Greater Auckland proposal is carried, there will no more Newmarket Council meetanyway. . Cr. Davies-. And a jolly good job, too. Cγ. Seccombe: Well, I propose that oisenssion of this matter be deferred Jffitn next Monday night, and that in we meantime the'whole Council be informed that it will take place. This was finally agreed to, and the Meeting subsided again into ordinary
