THE MELBOURNE CRICKETERS.

MATCH AGAINST AUCKLAND. AtrCKLANDERS AT THE WICKETS. The Melbourne Cricket Club's team commenced their first match in New Zealand to-day, when they met an eleven representative of Auckland. The weather was unfavourable for cricket. .Steady rain fell through the night and morning, lmt cleared off before noon somewhat, though it was soft. Light f-howers fell through the afternoon. The Melbourne team consisted of: W. W. Armstrong (capt.). C. E. McLeod, V. Ransford. D. Mailer, F. Yaughan, A. A. Aitken, P. J. Jennings, Henty, • /Wilkinson, and Butler. The following were the members of the Auckland team:—" A. Hadden (captain) and J. Hussey (North Shore), W. Stemson, H. B. Lusk; and \Y. Brooke-Smith (Eden), R. Mason and W, Robinson (Ponsonby), E. V. Sale and C. Oliff (Parnell), L. G. Humus (City), and A. E. Sloman (Grafton). W. W. Armstrong was elected captain of the Melbourne Eleven for the tour. Messrs. J. Watts and G. Schmoll are oflirinting as umpires. Harldon, the Auckland skipper, won the toss, and elected to bat. Lusk and HeniUH opened the Auckland innings. The innings was commenced at a quarter to three, Hemus taking strike to the bowling of C. McLeod, the Australian Eleven bowler. The first ball was pot nicely to leg for a single, and off the third ball three by.es were scored. Warwick Armstrong, who headed the bowling- analysis for the Australian tour, took up the bowling at the pavilion end. Lusk got his first to the on for a single. Armstrong made au unsuccessful appeal for lbw against Junius, and then was driven for a single. Lusk got him away nicely for two to tlio on. McLeod bowled a maiden over to Hemus, and then Armstrong with the first, ball of his second over clean bowled Lusk, who went out to a break and missnl it. One wicket for 8. t E. V.
