ACCKLAKD TROTTING CLOTTS SPKtNG MEETING,

The local trotting season was opened last Saturday, when , the opening, day's rating or the Auckland Trotting Club'e Spring Meeting took place. The weather was splendid, and the course, notwithstanding the heavy rain that fell during the week, was in firstrate order. The attendance was. hardly as large as expected, and speculation was slow. Mr Ike Hill officiated as judge, Mr Oeo. Read as timekeeper, and Mr C. O'Connor as starter, .the latter gentleman being in his usual form. The racing throughout was of an interesting character, the handicaps of Mr P. W. Edwards producing several excellent finishes. The meeting was well conducted by the secretary (Mr C. P. Mark) and the various officials, everything passing off successfully. During the afternoon the totalisators under Messrs Bloiafleld and Co the sum of £1*66, a decrease of £329 10/ on last year's amount. Racing commenced with the evergreen Maiden Trot, from which Prince Tuxie, lago, Tataramaika, and Nui were withdrawn, leaving 12 to go to the post, and of these Next Time was made an odds-on Xaveurlte. Porangi, from the limit, was quick to settle to his work, and as they turned for .home It looked as if he would not be caught; but at the distance the favourite got on terms, but got up, and Porangi drew out again—only, however to lost his advantage by a bad break, and the favourite settling down quickly from his skip caught nfan and going on won by three i lengths. Gory. Lass was a hundred yards away third. Time, 2.48 2* . Dividends, 18/ and £11/- < Only a quartette—Mataura, Gladys Kose, Solitary, and Little Mabel—came out for the Onehunga Handicap, an event for gallopers, and the latter was sorted out as something approaching a moral. The supporters of the favourite were, however doomed to disappointment, ac Solitary the outsider of the, party, went to the front when the flag fell and was never afterwards headed, lasting long - enough to win by a length from Gladys Rose, who was a couple Wvfae^dl S^i?/ Nt ' OfMate,ra - »»*"». Albertorious was the popular fancy for the Spring Handicap Trot, from which Young MeEinney and The Mooress dropped out. -The favourite was quickly hi the lead and pever gave the rest of the field a look in, winning pulling up by half a dozen lengths from Weary Willie, who was a bare length In front of Logan. Time, SJB Dividends, £1 1/ andlO/. . ""** w -*° *~ The wliole of the acceptors carded lined up for the Middle-class Trot, and General Election was made the medium of most support. The limit mare, Mies Rue, made the running till a furlong from home when she began mixing it badl}« and was caught and passed by Maequarrie and Klteonetea, the formei eventually winning by a couple of lengths from Kiteonetea, who was a similar distance In front of Miss Rue. Time, 4.13 2-5. Dividends, £2 5/ and £1 14/. . Waitekauri, Le Rosier, Torpedo IL, and Albertorious were the defections from the Stewards' Trot, and Young McKinney was made a strong favourite. The race gave rise to an exciting contest Colenso, from the limit, was responsible for the running for the greater part of the Journey, and a furlong from home looked a sure winner, but he broke, and Young McKinney, who was well .handled by Duncan, got to him a hundred yards from the post and beat him at the finish by about three parts of a length. Sir- Robert was 50 yards away third. Time, 3.49 3-S. Dividends, £1 4/ and 18/. - The eight accepters saddled np in the Pony Trot, and of these Mangonul was made an, odds-on chance. A surprise was however, in store, as the ancient Sandfly, who was on the limit mark, got going quickly and was never troubled! winning ■ pulling up by four lengths from Little Paul with the favourite 10 lengths away third. Time, 2.57 2-$. Dividends, £3 and £3L Etu, Gladys Rose, Merry Delaval, Legertte, and Lucy Godfrey dropped out of the October Handicap, a galloping event and Sonoma and Kilderkin, who were bracketed on the machine, found most support. Matjrara hopped «ot quickly when the barrier lifted, -and closely followed by Solitary made the running till well Into the home stretch, where Sonoma came through and getting the best of R in the run to won by a length from Mataura,' with Solitary .a similar distance away third. Tim* 1-1,1-5. Dividends, 17/ and 19/. ~* There were no withdrawals from the Elertric Handicap. Colenso was made a slightly better favourite than Black Rose and Taihoa. Ktteonetea was In the lead until 20 yards from the post, where Macquarriie caught him, and getting the best of a bumping finish won by a neck from Klteenetea, with Colenso a length «w«y *?&/ ""TZJ-X ■«* u£SJ £1 tte;n« the stewards held an tojntoy alleged Interference at the finish of the nee, bat decided not to
