HOKT.TLKA, Friday. A fire broke out at one o'clock this afternoon in the large two-storey residence of Mr D. J. Evans, county clerk, ine upper portion was completely gutted, and the building wrecked. The insurances are: £500 in the Norwich Union on the building, and £200 on the furniture in the Northern.
GISBORNE, this day. Members of Hawke's Bay Land Board returned to town last evening from a visit to the Motu. They expressed themselves astonished with the timber to be seen at the Motu, much of which is being sacrificed by clearing fires. Members say a mistake has been in throwing open the land before the railway reached it, as the timber would have nearly paid for the line.
