TEXAS MOB BURRS NEGRO AT STAKE.
A special to the Record from Waxahatchie tells of the burning on September 7th of Steve Davis, a negro, who confessed to assaulting Mis S. P. Nbrris, aged 20 A mob consisting of 3500 persons tied the negro to a piece of gas pipe that had been set in *he ground, piled fagots around him and set the mass on fire- The suffer! bugs of the negro were of short duration owing to the fierceness of the fire, which was fanned by a gale of wind which blew across the, prairie. The husband of the woman is said to have set the match to the tinder aud started the blaze that consumed the negro. Davis was arrested and taken before the woman, who at that time was not sure he was the man. She. had been desperately ill. He was again taken before the woman, who on sight of him fainted. When she recovered she identified him, and his fa.te was sealed. The negro finally confessed, detailing the crime. This is the third negro that has been burned in that section of Texas within a short time- One of these was cremated at Suinh-or Springs and another at Waco.
