BUYING AIT HEIR.

A romantic affair, the outstanding fear ture of which is an attempt by an unknown wealthy Englishwoman to purchase an heir at the price of £1200, is occupying the attention of the Paris police. Early in August a young woman named Jeanne Lanne was lying in a free maternity home. While ■ there she received a visit from a midwife named Xvert. She said that she knew of a noble Englishwoman who had been disappointed in the expected birth of an heir, and who thereby lost a legacy of many thousand pounds. None of the Englishwoman's relativs knew of the true state of things. Mme. Xvert therefore proposed to Jeanne Lanne that the latter should make over her baby to her in return for a sum of £1200. If the child lived over 12 months Lanne was to receive a further sum of £IQQO. After a prolonged argument Jeanne Lanne fell In with the offer. In order to facilitate matters she was removed at once from the maternity home. Her sudden departure led to inquiries. Both women were interrogated by a magistrate, and ultimately laid before aim the whole story. Their avowals implicated a Swiss named Tremont, who finally admitted that the woman's story was true, and that he was acting as. the EngUshwornan's confidential agent in the transaction. Tremont, however, absolutely refuses to give any hint as to the identity of his employer.
