SUNDAY BANDS IN FREEMAN'S
BAY. (To the Editor.) Sir,—That your correspondent "Sufferer" is a sufferer no one will deny, but the cause of his suffering is a debatable question, and space forbids its discussion. Now, however, the cudgels have been taken up by your "Zamiel," of "Random Shots." and he has fired one very much at randoa this time. It may be said he did not mention names, but having taken up the correspondence on the other side, his remarks are undoubtedly meant for us. Like most writers who are not conversant with his subject, he is very much astray. His sympathies are extended to all and sundry on account of being disturbed by such "early morning playing." This is immense. Anyone would think we were out disturbing people by fix or seven in the morning, when as a matter of fact we do not start until 10, and then usually in some distant part of the city, marching into Freeman's Bay at about 11 a.m. Any person in ordinary health who sleeps at that time of the morning is either sleeping off the effects of too much "waipiro"' imbibed -the night before, or else he is aoominably lazy. I strongly object to 'Zamiel's" sweeping condemnation of the '"Sunday morning sort of brass band." Were it not for the fact that your paper is widely read, I should treat the matter with the contempt it deserves. However, in justice to ourselves and others who play on Sunday morning, an planation is necessary. We play in the streets, not to annoy people, but to reach the people who do not attend a place of worship; and it is not reasonable to suppose we are going to stop because of a growler or two. When we are asked not to play in any district on account of sickness we are only too glad to accede to such a request.—l am, etc.,
H. G. HILL, B.M. Helping Hand Band.
