BOROUGH MEETINGS.

NEWMARKET. An ordinary meeting of this Council was held last evening and attended by Messrs F. Bennett (Mayor), W. Edgerley, H. Kinder, B. Holmes. C. Leek, Jas. McCuli, and A. Seccombc. Union street.—A request from ilr .(. Sticboury (as trustee for an estate) for alterations to tbe footpath in Union street. was referred to the Streets Committee. Drainage.—Mr Bodely sent, in writing, the conditions uuder which he would permit part, of the borough drainage pipes to pass through his property. —The conditions were considered to he unacceptable, but were referred to the engineer. Street Dust.—The Town Clerk of Parnell wrote suggesting that Newmarket should join with Parnell. Epsom, and Reniuera in accepting the Tramway Co.'s original street watering proposals, and that representatives of these bodies should meet to discuss the matter. The Waterworks Committee was authorised to confer with the other bodies las suggested. The Drainage Scheme. — (hi the motion of Mr Kinder a committee was appointed jto prepare a report showing the amount of work remaining to be done to complete the 1 drainage scheme of the borough.

"That the resolution fixing the various committees to consist of three members, with the Mayor as chairman, be rescinded." He pointed out that when there were only three members in a committee it was hard to get an amendment seconded, and the Mayor always had the casting vote. The present system gave the Mayor unlimited power, thongh he would not say that power had been wrongly used in the past. lie contended (hat the system was wrong.—Mr Smith seconded the motion.-The Mayor explained I Hint the old system practically enabled the | committee to rule the Council. Gas Lamps.—lt was agreed to purchase seven sas lamps at a cost of £4 2/0 each, to be erected in positions designated by [ho Streets Committee. Mr 11. Walker, gecrt'tary to the Ouehunga Town Band, asked that a lamp be erected near the drill-shed. Referred to the General Purposes Committee.. Storm Water.— Mr Warren Biyth wro-t<-complaining that owing to the tilled water channel opposite his property the storm water washed away his grou.'l. Refcried to the foreman of works with power ro effect the necessary work. Subsidy.—The Treasury forwarded £IS7 | 10.'. amount of subsidy on genera! rates, j Received. Broken Metal.—lt was agreed to accept the offer of I. Morton moved as an amendment that the question stand over, and a division resoled in Crs. Morton and Williams voting for the amendment and the Mayor, Crs. Hutchison. Moody. Bavr, Osborne and Skinner against. Quadrant-road.—Resolved, that Quadrantroad footpath be repaired. Symonds-streer.—The request to form n footpath in Syuionds-stmH, between Tra-t'algar-strcet and Manukau-roatl, was lert in abeyance. Albert -street.—lt was agreed lo effect rrpairs in Albei t-street to the extent of £1 4/. but the request of the T.T.T. Company for improvements was not upheld. Arrears of Rates.—On the suggestion of Cr. Moody it was agreed to sue for arrears of rates amounting to £'J4O, and that those not having paid lust year's rates be proceeded against forthwith. Streets Committee.—The Mayor gave notice to move at next nipeting. "That Must reels Committee be discharged and .n i.evv committee l*- set up." An old Building.—Cr.
