| TABERNACLE LITERARY SOCIETY. The members of the above society assembled last night to listen to two biographical sketches. Mr 11. rage wrote on the life of John Knox, aud Mr L. Moses on Elihu Burritt. the "Apostle of Labour."' Helpful criticisms followed. A MISSIONARY LECTURE. At St Peter's Presbyterian Church. Great North-road, last eveuing. Mr C. T. W. Wilson (missionary) gave ah interesting lecture on the South American Indians and missionI ary work. Mr Wilson resided for live i years in the Argentine Republic, and displayed a thorough knowledge of his subject, land his narrative greatly interested the audience. The lecture was illustrated by I limelight views. Mr Wilson was educated lin Dunedin. The chairman, the Rev. R. H. ' Catherwood. on behalf of the audience. ! thanked the lecturer, and then a substantial collection was taken up in aid of Mr I Wilson's mission iv America. | I AUCKLAND INSTITFTE. A lecture on Thackeray was delivered at a meeting of the Auckland Institute last night by Professor C. W. Egcrton. M.A., to a large audience. Opening his j interesting paper with a -reference to thespirit of pessimism which pervaded the literature of the age in which the great novelist wrote, the lecturer showed how his works marked the reaction which had set in from the period of romance. Many of Thackeray's characters represented his ideals of life, but he also showed life as k was. His view was a sad one, though he often concealed his sadness behind the veil of humour. Setting a high ideal an.l realising how vain was his hope of reaching those standards, Thackeray, while preserving his descriptive and humorous powers, became a satirist and a cynic.
