HEAT WAVE IN VICTORIA.

MELBOURNE, January 12. To-day wae the hottest of the season as far as Melbourne was concerned. At 11 a.m. the temperature was 101.G , , and from this it rose steadily until at 2.30 *p.m. it stood at 108.5The prevailing hot weather has been responsible for a high death rate among aged people and infants in various parts of the State. A woman named Mrs Fyhin collapsed in the city to-dey, and is in the Melbourne Hospital in a critical condition, as a result of the intense heat. Bush fir«s broke out in the Ravenswood district near Bendigo late to-night. It was estimated that fully 30 square miles of country have been covered by the fire. A large number of sheep have been burned. Passengers by the Moe-Walhalla coach had an exciting experience this evening. Portion of the journey lay through burning country, and the flames were so close to the roadside that at one point the side of the coach caught fire. At a number of other places fires have broken out in the bush, but the rain, which has fallen to-night over the southern portion of the Stat*, has checked the outbreaks.
