The "Post" is informed on the best authority that there is a misconception as to the position taken up by the Mines Department iiv suing for arrears of money for water supplied from the Government race at Kumara. A large amount has been due for years, and instructions were given that it was to be paid by the end of last year. A number of miners have not yet paid, and proceedings have accordingly been taken, and the Department has now decided that in future .all water-race charges must be paid on the date each claim washes up, SOUTHLAND FARMERS' UNION'S AFFAIRS. INVERCARGILL, this day. The finances of the Southland branch of the Farmers' Union are in an unsatisfactory position owing to the failure of members to pay their subscriptions. Mr I'atcrson, the organiser and veterinarian, has resigned on the score of illhealth, and his resignation has been held over for two months pending a conference of delegates to consider the situation. Crawford and T. Findlay. A BREACH OF THE PEACE. CtHRISTCHURCH, this day. A curious case was heard to-day, when H. M. Leathani was fined 20/ for creating a breach of the peace in Cathedral Square. Leathani insisted on making a speech urging the hands employed on electric tramway to strike for 8/ a day, and used abusive language towards them. MAORI WOMAN'S SUICIDE. ROTORUA, this day. A Maori woman yesterday committed suicide by jumping from a high point at Qwhata 'Lake, Rotorua, falling upon the rocks. She lingered for sis hour* and then expired. WOOL-STEALING CHARGES. ASHBURTOX, Thursday. At the Magistrate's Court Oliver Spieer, Edward ami Percy Eden, were charged, on three informations, with stealing wool in December last at Westerfield and Windermcrei The charge against Percy Eden was withdrawn on the application of the police.. Edward Eden and Oliver Spieer were committed for trial at the Supreme Court, Timaru, on February 7. Bail was allowed each of the accused in £200 own recognisance, and two sureties of £ 100 each. THE BONAFIDE TRAVELLER CLAUSE. WELLINGTON, Thursday. The Executive of the New Zealand Licensed Victuallers' Association has decided to assist the appeal of a Sunnier hotelkeeper against a conviction recently recorded by Major Keddell, S.M., for supplying liquor on Sunday to a person alleged to be a bona-flde traveller. THE GROUNDING OF THE WAINUI. WELLINGTON, Thursday. The steumer Wainui. which struck near d'Urville Island during a fog on night, was placed on the slip to-day. The damage was very superficial, amounting to about £50. A magisterial inquiry into the occurrence is to be held to-morrow-A PARK SUICIDE. CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. The body of a man, who had apparently been dead some days, was found this afternoon in long grace in an unfrequented part of Hugley Park. A revolver lay near by, and there was a bullet wound in the body, which was identified as that of Arthur George White, chimney sweep, who had been missing for .some "time. DUNEDIN COURT CASES. DUNEDIN, Thursday. At the City Police Court Cherles Buller. for keeping his fish-supper shop open on Sunday for the transection of business, was fined 2/6. Charles Beadle and two others, e'-arged with doing work in connection with the fitting of drains and sewers without having been admitted as licensed plumbers or drainers, were fined 1/ and costs. Several bookmakers, charged with trespassing on the Wingatui racecourse, at the last ra/e meeting, were fined £5 and costs. N.Z. ASSOCIATION'S BOWLING TOURNAMENT. CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. The >?ew Zealand Bowling Association's tournament was continued to-dgy in splendid weather, the doubles and singles being advanced to the semi-final stage.
