AUCKLAND HARBOUR BOARD. OPEN V. ENCLOSED BERTHAGE.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —Permit mc through your columns to draw attention to what I consider unnecessary in the harbour constructive works now contemplated by the Board: —Ist. —Breakwaters: These tidal walls should he eliminated or greatly modified, as the area affected would be far heyond likely needs, and unless thoroughly

enclosed the harbour would silt up rapidly. 2nd—Wharf alterations: The present system of T wharves should he conserved, and all new works in deep watel placed parallel with the tidal currents 3rd—Ferro-concrete: Gradual adoption of this more permanent material for the wharves and works, etc., and as I am of opinion that the local information supplied to the Board's engineer has been radically defective, I trust that before the works are thoroughly commenced the whole scheme will be reconsidered. I may add that the construction of New Plymouth Harbour in the near future will influence South Auckland district prejudicially in this matter,-and •should be considered in connection with harbour works in Auckland.—l am, etc, FRANCIS A. TREGELLES, C.E. ■at
