DEVONPORT BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Mr E. W. Alison (Mayor) presided at a meeting of the Devonport Borough Council last night, when Crs. G. V. Edgcnmbe, L. C. Dacre, W. J. Philson, Charles Murdoch, F. Mason, *V. Handley, and J- B. Graham were also present. Amending the By-laws.—A special meeting was held before the ordinary one to make a formal amendment in the by-law affecting the erection of buildings, providing for the addition in paragraph 1 of the words "Not including the eaves thereof, provided such eaves do not project more than two feet on either side of the building." The Mayor moved that the by-law be so amended, and this was agreed to. A License Question. —A letter was read from Messrs Patterson and Co., 'bus proprietors, stating that last year they paid £32 15/ in license fees for vehicles and drivers, but they observed that Auckland vehicles and drivers not licensed In Devonport were allowed to ply for hire in the borough. Under such circustances they need have only taken out half the licenses and they wished half the amount of the fees to be refunded or the Council to prohibit Auckland vehicles being brought over on the few days when money could be made in Devonport. The Mayor said that the intention of the by-law was that no vehicle should ply in the borough unless it was licensed, and the driver also, even if the vehicle only came into use in Devonport for a single day. Upon his motion the question was referred to the Streets and Worts Committee to inquire and report. A Road Extension.—Mr Henry Wilding, of Grove-road, wrote on behalf of his wife requesting the Council to extend Groveroad for about two chains so as to reach an allotment upon which it was proposed to build. The application was referred to the Streets and Works Committee. The Motor 'Busses.—Mr A. 11. Brookes, manager of the North Shore and Takapunn Motor 'Bus Co., applied for a fortnight's suspension of their time-table as there had been some difficulty with the motors. The letter state that experience in running the motors had clearly shown that a re-arrangement of the running times was necessary, and the company was now in a better position to meet the requirements of Lake Takapuna residents. While motors were off the service a time-table would be kept with horse 'busses. The application was granted. Building Permits.—The following building permits were granted:—G. Banks, house in Shoal Bay-road; J. M. Logan, house In Stanley Bay-road: Tones aud Sons, house in Rata-road; and E. W. Savage, house in Shoal Bay-road. Tarring and Sanding.—The report of the foreman of works, which was adopted, showed that 9A miles of paths have been re-tarred and sanded recently.
