WAIHI NEWS.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WAIHI, this day. Mr G. Vesey Stewart, J. P., of Katikati, was charged at the Police Court this afternoon, .before Messrs Slevin and Max' D. King (Justices), with a breach of Ihe borough by-laws by using a vehicle after sunset on the 23rd of December without carrying- a light. Defendant pleaded not guilty, and conducted his own case. He contended that the sun had not set, nor was he using the trap at the time, for it was resting on the side of the street. A lively argument followed, aed Sergeant Sheehan reported that the trap in question was being used. He was surprised at the stand taken by the defendant. If such a condition of things was allowed to be the streets of Waihi could be blocked by Katikati vehicles with impunity. In answer to a question by the Sergeant the defendant replied that he had been a Justice of the Peace for fifty years. The Bench upheld the defendant's contention, and dismissed the case.
